What is a ISP? Internet Service Provider
|
ISP is short for Internet Service Provider, a company that provides access to the Internet (Dial up, Cable, DSL, Broadband, T1). For a monthly fee, the service
provider gives you a software package, username, password and access phone number. Equipped with a modem, you can then log on to the Internet and browse the World Wide
Web and USENET, and receive and send emails. In addition to serving individuals, ISPs also serve large and small companies, providing a direct connection from the company's
networks to the Internet. ISPs themselves are connected to one another through Network Access Points (NAPs).
Most ISPs have a network of servers (mail, news, Web, and the like), routers, and modems attached to a permanent, high speed Internet "backbone" connection. Subscribers can then
dial into the local network to gain Internet access without having to maintain servers, file for domain names, or learn Unix.
Services offered by ISP
There are many kinds of internet connections offered by ISPs. Following are some of them
Dialup Connection
Dial up through a telephone line will give you 56,000 characters/second of information from the internet. 56,000 also called 56k.
High Speed Dialup Connection
High Speed dialup is a new generation of dialup access, which utilizes compression and caching technologies to speed up Web surfing and bring back the joy of using the Internet through a dial connection. Cable Connection

Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) is a new digital technology that brings high bandwidth to homes and small to medium sized businesses over the ordinary copper telephone lines presently
installed behind your walls. DSL technology is available in various flavors, collectively referred to as xDSL. It allows voice, video and data to be transmitted at very fast speeds,
20 or more times faster than an ordinary 56K modem and 10 times faster than ISDN.
Satellite Internet
As the name implies, satellite Internet uses a space satellite to deliver broadband access to homes. Because of this, even homes in areas where DSL or Cable are not available can receive
high speed access. Of course that access does come at a price. Satellite Internet is one of the more costly broadband alternatives.
